God Knows Your Name

What greater assault can Satan throw upon God’s children than for him to target the identity of man; God’s most precious creation made in his image. Genesis 1:27 states, “So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

Being male or female identifies our gender, but it does not identify our individuality. When God created Adam, he was only referred to as man. It isn’t clear to me if he named himself or if God did, but when the woman was created, Adam named her Eve. He gave her an identity.

Your name identifies you as a unique individual created by God. The Bible says that God calls us by name. John 10:3 states, “To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.”

Names can trace history and confirm facts. The Bible provides a list of names that include the genealogy of Christ. Through an angel, God told Joseph his soon-to-be virgin wife, Mary, had conceived a child by the Holy Spirit. Part of his instructions was to give the child a name. “She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

When I gave my heart to Christ and asked Him to forgive me of my sins, my name was instantly written in heaven. My gender wasn’t written down, my name was.

In Revelation, we are told only the names of those who are saved are written in the Lambs Book of Life. Hebrews 12:22-23 Revelation 21:27

Think about this. When this fallen world passes away and all is made new, Jesus will be given a new name and we will be given a new name. Revelation 2:17 states: “And I will give to each one a white stone, and on the stone will be engraved a new name that no one understands except the one who receives it.”

Revelation 3:12 “And I will write on them the name of my God, and they will be citizens in the city of my God—the new Jerusalem that comes down from heaven from my God. And I will also write on them my new name.”

Whether it’s Identity Politics or Cancel Culture, the enemy is trying to strip us of our God-given identity, worth, and value. We are individuals, made in his image, with purpose. No matter how society wants to group or omit us, one thing they can never do is take away our identity. For those who know Christ as their Savior, our names are sealed in the Lambs Book of Life.

    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.

The Message: “Oh yes, you shaped me first inside, then out;
    you formed me in my mother’s womb.
I thank you, High God—you’re breathtaking!
    Body and soul, I am marvelously made!
    I worship in adoration—what a creation!
You know me inside and out,
    you know every bone in my body;
You know exactly how I was made, bit by bit,
    how I was sculpted from nothing into something.
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth;
    all the stages of my life were spread out before you,
The days of my life all prepared
    before I’d even lived one day.” Psalm 139:13-16
