Pitcher of Water Dream

I just finished filling up a pitcher of water. I set it down and told those around me that the water was fresh with all natural fruit. As soon as I was finished saying this, I knew it represented the Fruit of the Spirit and I was to share it and give it away. End of dream.

Upon waking up, the first takeaway I had was that I am the only one who can “fill up my pitcher” and grow in my relationship with Christ. And I can’t share what I don’t have. I must be intentional in my pursuit to be filled with the Holy Spirit [water].

In the Bible, water represents Spirit and eternal life. John 7:37-39 “Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, ‘If you are thirsty come to me! If you believe in me, come an drink! For the Scriptures declare that rivers of living water will flow out from within.’ (When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had ot yet entered into his glory.”

I am the only one who can fill “my pitcher,” up with the fresh, living water of Christ. Satisfaction is found in no other and only Christ can satisfy my thirst from the things of this world. We must remain filled with Christ.

“Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14

The infilling of the Holy Spirit enables us to operate outside of our own ability. In this dream, the water was representing drinking what is spiritual, not what is natural, that of the flesh.

The waters of heaven are a perpetual spring of living water.  When I am filled with the Holy Spirit, there is a more natural flow (fresh, natural fruit) to walk in God’s promises. As Jesus said, “The nourishment comes from doing the will of God, and from finishing the work.” John 4:34

When I go sightseeing I don’t like to drink too much, and that includes when I’m in extreme heat. I don’t like to find myself in a situation when I need a bathroom and there are none to be found. I think my day goes better by reducing my liquids, but by the end of the day when I get back to my hotel, I’m dehydrated and my body is crying out “water, water, water.” I’m exhausted and in great need of reviving.

There have been times in life instead of being physically dehydrated, I’m spiritually dehydrated. When my spirit was calling out, “Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,” it’s because I was doing the vacation thing. I took the nourishment I needed to get by, but not enough to revive my soul. I let myself get spiritually dried up. I wasn’t taking in enough of the Living Water so that I would “thirst no more.”

I stumbled around, dry, thirsty, unsatisfied, wanting more, but not giving enough to  my spirit what it was craving. When I look back at those seasons, this is on me, not God. I tried navigating through those dry seasons without giving the attention my soul needed.

The fresh water (Holy Spirit) and fresh fruit (Fruit of the Spirit) revive the soul and give us what we need to be a reflection of God and to do his will. Our souls are made alive and are refreshed day-by-day when we take time to pray. Prayer is the best way to get out of a spiritually dry season.

Prayer gives God something to water. Prayer opens me up to be filled with the Spirit. Remaining spirit-filled fosters a need for more of God.

More of God is where God becomes brighter and more beautiful and I can become more like him. More like God is when the Holy Spirit produces his characteristics in me.

God’s nature is listed in the Fruit of the Spirit. When I am intentional in my pursuit of him, my prayer is that there will be a more natural flow of my love towards others and that God’s love will flow out of me: “But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentlenesses, and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-25

When we are infused with the Holy Spirit, we are controlled by the spirit and his characteristics are exhibited through us. The more God is seen through us, he imparts his glory through us, and we have more to share with others.

The way to navigate through a spiritually dry season is living in God’s land of living water - his presence. God’s I perpetual spring of living water is our source of everlasting life. He is our source of life and power.

What flows from our time with the Holy Spirit, flows out of us and into the lives of others. Our fruit spreads to others so that their fruit will do the same. That’s why we are to bear fruit. “You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: Love each other.” John 15:15-17

“Only Christ can quench our thirst from the things of this world and our fleshy desires. R.A. Torrey said, “No matter how deeply we drink we shall thirst again. No earthly spring of satisfaction ever fully satisfies. We may drink of the fountain of wealth as deeply as we may, it will not satisfy long. We shall thirst again. We may drink of the fountain of fame as deeply as any man ever drank, the satisfaction is “but for an hour. We may drink of the fountain of worldly pleasure, of human science and philosophy and of earthly learning, we may even drink of the fountain of human love, none will satisfy long; we shall thirst again. But then Jesus went on to say, “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst, but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” The water that Jesus Christ gives is the Holy Spirit.” The Person and Work of The Holy Spirit Apple Books.
